The Leibniz Institute on Aging - Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) in Jena is a federal and state government-funded research institute and member of the Leibniz Association (Leibniz-Gemeinschaft). FLI’ s internationally visible and highly competitive research is focused on understanding the mechanisms of aging and associated age-related diseases. Scientists from over 40 countries are currently investigating the molecular mechanisms of aging and the occurrence of age-related diseases. Our aim is to create the basis for new approaches in medicine as a way to improve the health of the elderly (www.leibniz-fli.de).

The Research group of Dr. Maria Ermolaeva is seeking Postdoctoral Researchers (m/f/x) to join the ERC funded research project LifeLongFit.

Postdoc (m/f/x) in Biology of Aging
Adaptive Resilience - Interventions for Healthy Aging

Research focus of the Lab:
The Ermolaeva Lab investigates adaptive stress responses and metabolic resilience mechanisms as putative drivers of healthy longevity. We search for pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions that promote healthy aging by boosting adaptive resilience at the cellular and organism level. Our experimental and analytical approaches include longevity screens in nematodes, microbiome screens, unbiased multi-omics analyses, cell culture, biomarker discovery and cross species translational studies.

Tasks and Challenges:

The LifeLongFit ERC project aims to find effective ways to extend lifespan at different ages. It builds on the discovery that metformin's benefits for longevity diminish in old organisms due to a loss of metabolic flexibility. This suggests that interventions developed in young organisms may not work well later in life. The project will explore age limitations of longevity treatments that rely on cellular resilience responses, like microbiome interventions and moderate stress inducers. Focusing on the specific intervention type, each Postdoc will use various techniques in C.elegans and human cells (i.e. Omics, genetics, drug screens) to (a) understand why age-related limitations occur and (b) restore youthful responses in older organisms. Finally, in vivo studies in vertebrates will be initiated to validate the newly developed longevitiy strategies.

        Requirements:

        • PhD in Biology, Biochemistry, Life Sciences, Biomedicine or equivalent
        • Advanced experience in cell culture methods
        • Published or submitted research articles or patents
        • strong commitment and work ethics
        • excellent spoken and written English

          will be a plus:
        • Programming skills in R or other programming languages
        • Experience in analyzing large omics data sets

        We offer:

        • The opportunity to join a very well-equipped Lab with an international team and with focus on interventions for healthy aging
        • Access to multiple state-of-the-art facilities. Our work is embedded in the Beutenberg Campus, an interdisciplinary base for innovative research
        • A position integrated in the FLI PostDoc Network. The Network promotes interdisciplinary collaborations involving clinician scientists, basic scientists and bioinformaticians and supports career development and postdoctoral training courses
        • The contract conditions and the salary will be according to the collective labour agreement for public service employees of the federal states of Germany (TV-L E13) for 2 years initially, with a possibility of extension for the project.
        • Flexible working time, a family friendly working environment that provides a healthy work-life balance, company health management including support for childcare solutions and dual career options
        • We provide support with various qualification and further training opportunities, use of the Haufe learning platform with numerous different online courses

        Application:

Please apply online through the FLI application portal by 30.11.2023.

Applications will be analyzed regarding skills, competences and qualifications. All qualified persons, regardless of gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion or belief, disability, age, sexual orientation and identity or other classification protected by law will receive consideration for employment.
